How Does Dick's 5 & 10 Do It?!

Kathe Hill • Feb 06, 2020

Dick’s 5 & 10 is one of the last remaining Five and Ten’s in America. How have they survived while most Five and Ten’s we all grew up with have closed? What is their secret recipe for fun?

Not only is Dick Hartley’s 5 & 10 surviving after more than 58 years…. we are thriving with over a million customers through the doors each year.
As marketing director, I get asked many questions about SO many things pertaining to the Dick’s 5 & 10 experience. In my blogs, I will attempt to answer some of the top things we are asked! How does Dick’s do it? Well, you’ll get a behind the scenes peek inside by following my blogs. What goes on in our world!?

In 1961 Dick Hartley, founded Dick’s 5 & 10, a 1,500 square foot store with the philosophy that no other store would be as WELL STOCKED. Today, the second generation operates a 10,000 square foot store with over 250,000 items as they continue to pursue their father’s dream.

NOW…. With all those items in stock , one might ask “How do you Inventory all those items? Do you really count every one of them?”

YES… our staff counts every item in the store each year in January. It takes weeks. Not only do they count the merchandise on the sales floor, but in the store basement, and two additional storage facilities.

They are on their hands and knees and stomachs on the ground, under counters, in basement nooks and cranny’s. … you name it! It is an exhausting few weeks for them!

During January many things are happening to prepare for the next year. Not only Inventory, which is a HUGE event here, we are deep cleaning the floors, counters and all of Dick’s famous collections hanging throughout the store.

Once the inventory and cleaning are done we can move onto redesigning some of the departments and setting up the store for new FUN! Each year we add new experiences for our guests to enjoy! It’s exciting to see how creative our managers and staff are as they reset their departments .

Now, at the same time all this is going on department managers are traveling and going to markets all over the USA to buy the unique merchandise that makes Dick’s 5 & 10 so special. KC, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, Nebraska and more! It’s all about the experience at Dick’s 5 & 10 and finding the right mix of nostalgia and trending items is key. Next, we blend in FUN and adventure and there you have it… Generations of FUN since 1961.

The 2020 merchandise has started arriving and something new is now arriving every day. Come see us… we are still open while all of this happens around us! Great time to visit us and see what’s up in 2020.

Seven Things You Might Not Know About Dick's 5 & 10
By Dick's 5 & 10 07 Nov, 2018
As familiar as you may be with Dick’s 5 & 10, here are few facts you may not have heard before: Dick’s 5 & 10 was founded by Dick Hartley and has been family owned and operated in Branson since 1961. His son, Steve, and son-in-law, Dave, work to carry on Dick’s legacy and desire to make shopping fun! Dick’s 5 & 10 had never been closed during their regular business hours—even if the weather was severe—until December 13, 2006, when the store closed to allow all employees to attend founder Dick Hartley’s funeral. On December 9, 2016, Dick closed the store one last time and passed away later that evening at the age of 80. Five-and-dime stores were commonplace across the United States in the early- to mid-20th century. Dick’s 5 & 10 is one of the last five-and-dime stores still operating today. Dick’s 5 & 10’s has been at its current location since the early 1970s. The store is 10,000 square-feet, and its shelves are stocked with over 75,000 items! Wonder where the keep all their stock? Over Christmas break in 1981, Steve and a friend dug out a 400-square-foot addition to the basement stockrooms! You can shop ‘til you drop, but you can also take in one of several impressive collections housed at Dick’s 5 & 10, such as White River Arrowheads, WWII Aviation Prints, a 60-foot baseball “Wall of Fame,” and even a collection of antique washing machines! Founder Dick Hartley began his first collection in the store with the addition of a lone model airplane. In 1973 Dick’s became the first Branson merchant to produce souvenir t-shirts using a hot iron press. Dick would joke about his t-shirt-making productivity—4.3 shirts per minute! Dick’s Candy Emporium is second-to-none with over 1100 different kinds of candy and snacks, including hard-to-find, old-fashioned candy and over 100 different varieties of soda. In fact, Dick’s has sold enough flat taffy to stretch from downtown Branson to Silver Dollar City! From ExploreBranson.com

Welcome to Dick's 5 & 10 in Branson!
By Dick's 5 & 10 03 Oct, 2018
Dick’s 5 & 10 store has been a Branson shopping destination and downtown landmark for over 55 years. Many of our visitors remark that browsing our aisles brings back memories as they spot items they haven’t seen in years, while younger shoppers get excited about the huge selection of treasures they’ve never seen before. Even those who just stop in for a look around often find themselves spending an hour or more exploring. Dick’s 5 & 10 is definitely among the best shopping in Branson! Our History Dick’s 5 & 10 opened in downtown Branson in 1961, and while the city has changed in monumental ways in the 55 years since, the store remains a fixture in Branson shopping. It has changed locations only once, in 1970 when founder Dick Hartley was able to upgrade from his original 1500 sq ft store to the 10,000 sq ft location on Main Street that you see today. Dick’s vision for a variety store stocked with a little bit of everything lives on, as does his idea to make the store more interesting by decorating with one of a kind collections and antiques. Dick was the store’s sole employee for the first few years of operation and he continued working at Dick’s 5 & 10 until he passed away in 2006 at the age of 80. It continues to be a family business, withSteve Hartley and Dave Montgomery still instrumental in the store’s operation today.
